When she was 45 years old, this non-athlete set a goal to climb Africa’s tallest peak before she turned 50. She knew she could train up for the challenge - she had 5 years to get ready for it, after all. The opportunity to go to East Africa presented itself before she knew it, much sooner than she expected, and at a time when she and her family were in crisis.

Hear the story of one brave woman’s journey, how she prepared to go it alone and the heart-wrenching life lessons she learned along the way, lessons that will have meaning for anyone who has experienced challenges and loss in her or his own life.

Kilimanjaro One Woman Journey to the Roof of Africa and Beyond eBook Deb Denis Linda C Hamilton Linda Pennington Simon Mtuy

This is a great guide to Kilimanjaro for the self reflecting reader and/or traveller. If you are looking for technical tips, there are many but Deb Denis' story of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is much more. She is a life coach and she approaches her family dynamic and travels with a positive goal oriented mindset. Denis includes interesting facts about her surroundings and excerpts from her audio journal and itinerary. If you don't like vacation photos or tales of emotional catharsis make you uncomfortable, you may want to skip it, but I enjoyed the whole package.

Kilimanjaro One Woman Journey to the Roof of Africa and Beyond eBook Deb Denis Linda C Hamilton Linda Pennington Simon Mtuy Reviews

This book is a great guide to hiking Mt Kilimanjaro AND an amazing emotional journey of a woman traveling solo with some tough life (and cell phone) challenges. The author explains sights, sounds and experiences so well that I felt like I was hiking along with her. I enjoyed the pictures in the book and on Deb's website as it helped visualizing the areas she described along the hike. If I ever plan to hike Kilimanjaro I will re-read this book as it contained tons of facts, suggestions and insights in the planning of the hike and the hike itself. I agree with the reviewer who stated "And through her words, she gives readers the encouragement to conquer their own Kilimanjaro"!
...even if you'd never consider making the climb yourself. If you are an armchair exercise nut, as I am, you can have an exhilarating adventure in the comfort and safety of your own home. Deb Denis invites you to share her sense of adventure, her successes, and the challenges of an extraordinary journey that is the subject of this compelling little paperback.

In a narrative that is packed with facts and information, you can prepare to make the climb yourself, or you can focus on the warmth, joie de vivre, and emotional strength of the author. Deb's personal story and easy style add an unexpected dimension to this engaging read.

I didn't want Kilimanjaro One Woman's Journey to the Roof of Africa and Beyond to end. Thanks to Deb Denis, I have added a new goal to my own personal list to be "lighter in the world". Let me know if it happens to you too! Enjoy.
Deb's courageous, authentic and detailed account of the physical, mental and spiritual challenges and aha's are awe-inspiring and magnanimously generous. I was deeply moved by her story and applaud her stand for transformation. This book is epic - truly a heroic journey.
I read and re-read parts of this book many times and skipped some other parts irrelevant to the climb. Overall a good book and impressive solo journey of this poor woman whose husband didn't even join her so she spent weeks by herself surrounded by just strange men that provided her business. I am impressed by her feat.
I loved this book because it is the story of a woman's journey with her back pack loaded with the cares and worries that we carry as women. Our mothers, our children, our defects. How can we climb a mountain, the highest mountain in Africa with all this on our backs? and still have enough room for water ? It is a challenge. But a doable one. I am 68 years old and I will climb Kilimanjaro this summer and I thank Deb for telling me where to find wool pants. I hate to be cold so I am sure those wool pants will be a blessing. We all need blessings in this world. Read this book if you are facing this challenge or perhaps another mountain that seems to be blocking your progress. Remember "pole pole" go slowly and you can summit.Philippa

The book was informative but it is more of her personal journey than a book about climbing the mountain. This is a good book if you want inspiration but at times it felt very self-indulgent. There are much better books out there to get a sense of climbing the mountain. I applaud her making the journey and writing about it but not sure it has wide appeal.
Deb Denis's book about her ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the African continent, is multi-faceted, to say the least. First of all, it's a fairly straightforward account of her adventure and accomplishment so that the reader gets a clear and reasonably detailed feel for what the experience was like for the author. Secondly, woven throughout the story is the subtext of the author's emotional struggle over her dying mother and the emotional scars left by what, to her child's eyes, looked like rejection by both her parents when she was still very young. Added onto the account of climbing Kilimajaro is a description of her visit to the Serengeti, which followed her adventure on the mountain. All of this is rendered in clear, crisp, economical prose that captures well the emotions and physical sensations that accompany such a journey. In addition to the story of her travels itself, Ms. Denis favors the reader with several appendices containing a wealth of practical information for the prospective climber of Kilimajaro and/or visitor to East Africa.

For those who love mountains, outdoor adventure, Africa, and/or true accounts of individuals who have experienced new dimensions of self-discovery by going beyond what they believed were their own limitations, this will be a rewarding read, especially for "those of the feminine persuasion." The spirit of the book, in fact, is a good deal like that of Cindy Ross's much earlier account of her solo hike of the Appalachian Trail. I would recommend this book enthusiastically.
